After an entertaining evening of belly dance at the BDSS show, followed by drinks at the Davenport while racking our brains over why there continues to be a hula number, the next morning was time to forget all that glamour and simply learn some new moves. Bozenka, whose performance the previous evening was, I think fabulous (and her body is so perfect for shimmies!) got a few well established belly dancers (I was the only one from far away) together for a master class. It wasn’t as “master” as I’d hoped, but she was a kind and generous teacher and very personable and “real”. I took home some fun combinations (I made sure I took notes, as there was nothing to remember them by but sheer will power) and got a nice reminder about arm positioning and shoulder isolations. Bozenka also touched on emotions and acting and gave us a fun if not daunting exercise which a few brave souls (not me!) took on for the class. I was amazed at the quality of emotion many of the dancers were able to bring about, just improvising. At the end, it was pleasant to have a chance to ask questions about what its like “on the road” hear some funny anecdotes and more importantly, get some costume change tips! Thanks to Nadiya, who sponsored Bozenka’s workshop, and Marianna who owns the beautiful studio it which it was held.
